Description:      When Margot Geiger attended her first meditation program more than two decades ago, she had no idea what was about to unfold. Much to her surprise, she received a spiritual awakening from a meditation master.
From that point on, Margot's life followed an unexpected path. She lived in ashrams, followed intense spiritual discipline, and dedicated herself to achieve ultimate liberation. Yet, as she pursued the lofty heights of self-inquiry with the ferocity of a hungry tiger, cancer stalked her quietly, stealthily, like a panther in the night. Time and again, Margot prevailed over it, always focusing on the life lessons her illness brought to light.
Excerpted from her diary: "Something very profound happened this morning in meditation. I am shaken loose from old moorings and I fall, fly, soar through habitual boundaries into freedom.
"I feel I have changed so much in the time I've been with you-my guru-that I don't know who I am anymore. My guru laughed when I said to her, 'I don't feel like Margo, and if it's appropriate, I'd like to have a spiritual name.' She leaned back and looked at me for some time, then nodded and smiled. 'Muktabai,' she said. I asked her what it meant, and she said, 'It means a free woman.'
"I have meditated and contemplated living and dying every day, and what had, at first, been an intellectual idea became an experienced truth: I have no control over living or dying. All the experiences, including cancer, have been the path I walk, becoming more and more Muktabai, the 'free woman.' …If cancer be my path to liberation, so be it! Death would come when it was its time, and no desire, hopes or fears would have any effect on that. I surrendered my living and dying to God, the Guru, and felt so free!"
A Free Woman is the intimate, joyful, and captivating chronicle of Muktabai's spiritual journey the last twenty-plus years of her life.
